Ultra Fiord

Puerto Natales, Chile · Feb 3 – 7 · Main quest length: 5 days

DATES EXPECTED

Trail running through Torres del Paine fjord country, distances from 16km up past 55km, through terrain that Patagonia backpackers spend weeks saving up to see — Ultra Fiord just happens to have a timing chip attached to it. Granite towers, wind that will actively try to blow you off the trail, and glacial fjords doing most of the scenery work while your legs do the rest.

This is bucket-list solo-travel territory even before the race exists — Torres del Paine draws solo backpackers by the thousands every season, and the trail-running community layered on top of it is famously welcoming to international entrants showing up alone. Puerto Natales itself runs on backpacker-hostel infrastructure, so the days before and after the race (there's little reason not to add a few) cost far less than the flights to get there.

Getting to Chilean Patagonia is the real expense here; once you're on the ground, hostels, camping, and the town's budget-traveler economy keep daily costs in check even as the race itself delivers one of the most dramatic backdrops in endurance sport.

  1. 01 Distance options span 16km to 55km+ — choose based on trail-running experience, since the terrain and weather are genuinely demanding even at shorter distances.
  2. 02 Patagonian wind is a real hazard, not just an inconvenience — expect race-day gear requirements to be strictly enforced.
  3. 03 Puerto Natales runs on backpacker-hostel infrastructure — cheap lodging is easy to find even though getting there isn't.
  4. 04 Exact 2027 dates aren't yet published; the early-February window is a pattern estimate from prior years — confirm before booking flights.
  5. 05 Add days before or after for Torres del Paine itself — you're already at the gateway to one of South America's best trekking destinations.
