Two Oceans Marathon

Cape Town, South Africa · Mar 31 – Apr 4 · Main quest length: 5 days

Billed, credibly, as the world's most beautiful marathon — a 56km ultra that actually hugs both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coastlines in one loop around the Cape Peninsula, climbing Chapman's Peak with the ocean dropping away on one side the entire time. There aren't many races where the scenery is a legitimate competitor for your attention against the actual physical effort of running it, but this is one.

Unlike some marathon majors, Two Oceans doesn't require a ballot for international runners — you enter directly, which makes the solo logistics refreshingly simple. Cape Town's running-tourism infrastructure is well developed: pacing groups, expo services, and a huge international field that treats solo entrants as entirely normal rather than an edge case. You'll spend the days before the race doing the sensible solo taper — short walks, carb-loading at whichever restaurant looked good, maybe a cable car up Table Mountain if your legs can spare it — and the days after doing considerably less walking than planned.

The finish, deep into the 56km ultra distance, rewards you with bragging rights over a route most people will never even drive, let alone run. Add a few extra Cape Town days on either side and this becomes one of the best race-plus-destination combinations on the continent.

  1. 01 No ballot required for international entrants — register directly through the official site well ahead of the race, since popular distances still fill up.
  2. 02 The ultra (56km) is the marquee event on the Sunday; a shorter 21km option exists if you want the course's beauty without the ultra distance.
  3. 03 Base yourself in the City Bowl or Sea Point for easy access to both race logistics and everyday solo exploring.
  4. 04 Chapman's Peak's climb is the psychological crux of the course — pace conservatively through the first half so you have legs left for it.
  5. 05 Cape Town in early April is late summer/early autumn — warm, dry, and excellent for both race day and the sightseeing around it.
