Sziget Festival

Óbudai-sziget is a whole island turned into a temporary city, and for five days the Danube runs on either side of a place that has decided normal rules don't apply. Eight stages, a couple hundred acts, and a footprint big enough that you could spend the entire festival never seeing the same corner twice — which is, for a solo traveler, the entire point. Nobody here is "the one who came alone." You're just one more person crossing a bridge toward a bassline.

The genius of Sziget solo is that the island does the socializing for you. Queue for coffee at 11am and you're in a conversation with a Dutch backpacker and two Hungarian students before the espresso's done. Wander into a silent disco tent at 2am because the main stage line was too long, and you'll leave with someone else's contact info and no memory of trading yours. The campground becomes its own small nation over the week — tents pitched close enough that "excuse me, do you have a lighter" turns into a running friendship by day three.

Budapest itself is the pre- and post-game — cheap, gorgeous, and just a short hop from the island, so build in a day on either end to actually see the city instead of just the ferry route to it. By the time the last headliner wraps, you'll have a blister count you're proud of and a phone full of half-remembered new friends scattered across a dozen countries.
