Osaka Street Food Crawl Week
Osaka, Japan · Oct 3 – 10 · Main quest length: 8 days
Osaka calls itself the nation's kitchen and then builds an entire culture around eating standing up, alone, fast, and well. This is arguably the single most solo-friendly food city on the planet: counter seating is the default, not the exception, and nobody at a takoyaki stand is going to ask why it's a table for one.
You work the week like a route — Dotonbori for the neon and the classics, Kuromon Market in the mornings before the tour groups arrive, back-alley kushikatsu counters that only fit six stools and where the chef will just start handing you things once you nod. Solo travel here isn't a workaround for the food scene, it's the format the food scene was built for.
By day four you'll have a mental map of which stalls have the shortest lines at which hours, and you'll be ordering in enough broken Japanese that a couple of vendors start recognizing you. That's the real reward — not just the food, but becoming a regular somewhere for a week.
