Monkey Buffet Festival

A town lays out a literal banquet — fruit towers stacked shoulder-height, sticky rice, whole watermelons, crates of soda — at the foot of Phra Prang Sam Yot temple, for an audience of roughly 3,000 macaques who consider Lopburi theirs and have the run of the place to prove it. It's part harvest-festival gratitude, part tourist spectacle, and entirely a town organizing its year around the animals that already own its rooftops and power lines.

Say the quiet part too: Lopburi's monkey population isn't a quaint detail, it's a real strain. Bold macaques snatch bags, phones, sunglasses, anything loose, and the overpopulation got serious enough that Thai authorities ran a sterilization campaign on more than 1,600 macaques in 2024 to try to bring the numbers under control. The festival runs alongside that effort, not instead of it — you're watching a community's genuinely complicated relationship with its most famous residents, not a clean postcard moment.

It's a two-hour train from Bangkok and costs next to nothing, which makes this one of the easiest, cheapest solo day trips on the board — show up, watch a town feed several thousand very confident monkeys, keep your bag zipped, and be home by dinner.
