Marrakech Marathon & Half
Marrakech, Morocco · Jan 31 · Main quest length: 1 day
DATES EXPECTEDWinter sun, a flat fast course past the Koutoubia Mosque and out through palm groves, and a finish line back in a city that's about to swallow you whole in the best way — the Marrakech Marathon does a lot with a mild January morning. The course itself is scenic without being showy: red-walled Marrakech giving way to open palmeraie and back again, a route built to be run comfortably rather than survived.
Solo works well here because the race and the city are two completely different registers of the same trip, and you can move between them at your own pace. Run the marathon or half in the cool morning, and by early afternoon you're the exact right kind of tired to disappear into the medina's souks — haggling half-heartedly over a leather bag, drinking mint tea in a shaded stall, letting the maze of alleys absorb the last of your race-day adrenaline. There's an active running-tour community around Moroccan winter races, so solo entrants aren't unusual; you'll find yourself paired up with other travelers doing the same trip almost by accident.
It's a genuinely cheap way to combine a bucket-list race with a full Moroccan city break, and the January timing means you're trading a dark, cold winter at home for palm trees and 20°C afternoons.
