Ladakh Marathon

Leh, India · Sep 10 – 13 · Main quest length: 4 days

At 17,618 feet, the Ladakh Marathon holds the title of world's highest AIMS-certified marathon, and the thin air makes sure you never forget it. You'll run past monasteries clinging to hillsides above Pangong-adjacent valleys, breathing harder than you've ever breathed for a "flat" section of road, in a landscape so stark and huge that the altitude sickness almost feels like a fair trade.

The race itself is only part of the trip. Mandatory acclimatization days are built into any sane Ladakh Marathon plan, and those days are where the solo magic actually happens — wandering Leh's markets, sitting in monastery courtyards, easing into the elevation while a huge international community of solo runners does the exact same thing around you. Leh's guesthouse and homestay scene makes this an easy place to be alone without ever feeling isolated; everyone's here for some version of the same slow-burn adventure.

Budget for flights in and out (Leh's geography leaves few other options), but once you're on the ground, this is one of the more affordable high-altitude bucket-list experiences on the calendar.

  1. 01 Do not skip the acclimatization days — arrive at least 2-3 days before race day regardless of your fitness level; altitude sickness doesn't care how many marathons you've run at sea level.
  2. 02 Foreign entry runs about USD 120 for the full marathon; distances range down to shorter, less brutal options if 17,618 feet of altitude sounds like enough of a challenge on its own.
  3. 03 Leh's homestays are cheap and often come with a family who'll feed you better than any race-week restaurant.
  4. 04 Hydrate aggressively in the days before the race — altitude dehydrates you faster than you'll notice until it's a problem.
  5. 05 Pack layers — Leh mornings are near-freezing even in September, and the temperature swings hard once the sun is up.
