La Tomatina

Buñol, Spain · Aug 26 · Main quest length: 1 day

At 11am a cannon shot ends any pretense of dignity for the next sixty minutes, and 120 tonnes of overripe tomatoes turn a small Spanish town into the world's largest, reddest free-for-all. Nobody here is watching from the sidelines — you came to Buñol to get hit in the chest with a tomato by a stranger, and within the first five minutes someone absolutely will.

The genius of La Tomatina as a solo trip is that it erases the need for a crew almost instantly. You don't team up so much as get folded into whichever knot of people is closest when the first truck rolls through — Australians on one side, a Spanish family on the other, all of you screaming and hurling pulp at nobody and everybody. An hour later a second shot ends it, hoses come out, and the entire town becomes a communal cleanup effort that somehow feels just as bonding as the fight itself.

Most people day-trip in from Valencia, since Buñol itself has almost no beds to offer, which means your whole La Tomatina experience is bookended by a train ride with a carriage full of people in old clothes clearly headed to the same chaos you are. Conversations start themselves.

  1. 01 Buy your entry ticket online in advance — La Tomatina caps attendance and sells out, and there's no day-of box office to save you.
  2. 02 Wear old clothes and shoes you're prepared to throw away; tomato acid and closed shoes in a mosh-pit crowd are a bad combination — some regulars wear goggles too.
  3. 03 Base yourself in Valencia and take the early-morning train to Buñol — there's essentially no accommodation in town and everyone does the same commute, which is its own pre-party.
  4. 04 Squash your tomatoes before throwing (a festival rule, not just etiquette) — whole tomatoes thrown hard actually hurt.
  5. 05 Bring a plastic bag for your phone and nothing else valuable — pockets fill with pulp and anything you're not willing to lose should stay at your hostel.
