Kraków Christmas Market

The Rynek Główny — Kraków's vast medieval market square — gets strung with lights and packed with wooden stalls every winter, and the result is routinely ranked among the best Christmas markets in Europe without ever losing the compact, walkable scale that makes it so good solo. You can cover the whole thing in twenty minutes or spend three hours nursing a mulled wine and doing slow laps. Both are correct.

Solo works here because nothing about a Christmas market demands company. You graze — oscypek cheese grilled and topped with cranberry, pierogi from a stall with a line worth waiting in, kiełbasa smoke drifting over the square — and you can do it at your own pace, stopping wherever smells best. The square itself, framed by St. Mary's Basilica and the Cloth Hall, is genuinely beautiful at night, dusted with snow more often than not, and safe enough that wandering it alone after dark feels like the intended experience rather than a risk to manage.

Kraków beyond the market rewards a few extra solo days — the old town is dense with history, Wawel Castle looms over the river, and Auschwitz-Birkenau is a sober, essential day trip if you haven't been.
