Inti Raymi: Festival of the Sun

Watch 700 performers reenact the Inca festival of the sun for free from the Sacsayhuamán hillside — no ticket required, just show up early and stake your spot on the grass above the amphitheater where the empire's high priest, in full ceremonial dress, once again addresses Inti at the winter solstice. It's the second-largest cultural event in South America after Rio Carnival by most estimates, and unlike Rio it costs almost nothing to watch properly.

The free hillside viewing at Sacsayhuamán is where most of Cusco goes, and it's genuinely one of the best free cultural spectacles anywhere — the Coricancha and Plaza de Armas ceremonies earlier in the day are free too, with only the tribune seating requiring a ticket. Cusco's dense solo-backpacker infrastructure (hostels, free walking tours, easy Sacred Valley day trips) makes it simple to build a full solo week around the festival, using Inti Raymi as the centerpiece of a trip that already had Machu Picchu on the itinerary.

Fixed to the winter solstice every June 24th, this is one of the few events on this board you can plan years out with total date certainty.
