Roughly 9,000 men in nothing but fundoshi loincloths pack into Saidai-ji temple in pitch darkness and grab, shove, and climb over each other for two sacred wooden sticks — shingi — thrown into the crowd at 10pm, each one worth a year of guaranteed luck to whoever walks out holding it. It's one of Japan's oldest and most physically intense festivals, freezing-water purification rituals included, and it runs the third Saturday of every February.

Be clear about which festival this is, because the internet muddies it: the widely reported 2024 stories about a "naked festival" changing its format or admitting women were about a completely different event — Konomiya Shrine's Hadaka Matsuri in Aichi. Saidaiji Eyo runs unchanged: traditional, male-participant, the format it's always been. This is the real thing, not the version that made international headlines for evolving.

What makes it unusual for a Japanese festival is that foreigners can actually register to participate solo — a rare opening in a country where most traditional festivals are closed, insider affairs. Spectating is just as accessible: a 30-minute train from Okayama Station gets you there, standing-area tickets run ¥500–1,000.
