Great Ocean Road Running Festival
Lorne, Australia · May 16 – 17 · Main quest length: 2 days
DATES EXPECTEDOne of the world's most scenic coastal highways, closed off entirely for a weekend so runners can have it — no cars, no shoulder-hugging, just cliffs dropping to the Southern Ocean on one side and gum-tree ridgeline on the other, for a stretch of road most people only ever experience from behind a windshield. Distances run from a 6km fun run up to a full 60km ultra, which means this is less a single race and more a weekend-long festival with something for whatever shape you're in.
The spread of distances is what makes it so solo-friendly — you're not committing to a single elite-only event, and organizer-run shuttles handle the point-to-point logistics that would otherwise be a headache to sort out alone between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Regional Victoria lodging is a fraction of Melbourne prices, and the small-town race-weekend atmosphere (finish-line food trucks, a crowd that actually knows the course) makes solo arrival easy rather than awkward.
Add a couple of extra days on either side for the Great Ocean Road's other marquee stops — the Twelve Apostles chief among them — and this becomes one of the best race-plus-road-trip combinations going.
