Fes Festival of World Sacred Music

There's a reason UNESCO recognized this festival as a contribution to world peace and not just a concert series. Inside the world's largest car-free medina, sacred music from a dozen different traditions — Sufi qawwali, Gregorian chant, Andalusian orchestras, Gnawa devotional trance — takes turns filling courtyards and riad gardens that have stood for a thousand years. Nobody's here to be seen. They're here to listen, and that changes the whole social contract of showing up alone.

You'll find yourself sitting cross-legged on a stone floor at Bab Al Makina as the sun goes down, surrounded by strangers who are all doing the same quiet thing you are — paying attention. The free Sufi Nights program spills into smaller venues around the medina after dark, less formal, more intimate, and the kind of setting where solo travelers don't stand out because everyone's facing the same direction: toward the music. Between concerts, Fes itself does the rest of the work — a medina so labyrinthine that getting lost isn't a mistake, it's the itinerary.

By the festival's end you'll have heard music you can't categorize, in courtyards you couldn't find again if you tried, surrounded by people whose languages you didn't share but whose silence during a particularly good qawwali set you understood completely.
