El Colacho (Baby Jumping Festival)

Men dressed as the Devil sprint down a street in Castrillo de Murcia and leap over rows of infants born that year, laid out on mattresses by their own families, in a ritual meant to cleanse the babies of original sin. It has run this way since the 1620s. It has a four-century clean safety record — for the babies, whose parents place them there on purpose, with total confidence in a tradition their village has never broken.

El Colacho happens the Sunday after Corpus Christi, not on Corpus Christi itself, which is a correction worth knowing since a lot of listings get it wrong. There's no published 2027 date yet — this is a high-confidence calculated estimate, not an official announcement — but the pattern has held for years and Corpus Christi 2027 lands on Thursday, May 27, putting the festival on Sunday, May 30.

This is a tiny village with essentially no tourist infrastructure of its own — you'll want a car and a base in Burgos, 40 minutes out, with an early arrival to actually get a viewing spot along the procession route. The spectacle itself is brief, ritual, and procession-based rather than a long day of activity, which makes it a quick, safe, welcoming detour that's more about logistics than difficulty.
