Carnival of Binche

Nobody outside Belgium seems to know this exists, which is baffling once you've seen it: the Gilles of Binche, in wax masks and towering ostrich-feather headdresses, wooden clogs stomping in unison to drum rhythms, hurling blood oranges into the crowd for three straight days. It's UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage, genuinely one of Europe's oldest and strangest carnivals, and almost entirely unbothered by mass tourism.
The compact town square makes this an easy, low-effort solo watch — Binche is small enough that you can stake out a spot, catch the full procession, and never feel lost in a crowd the way you might at a bigger carnival. The orange-throwing is chaotic by design (getting hit is considered good luck, not an insult) but the atmosphere stays fundamentally safe and community-minded rather than rowdy. Tuesday's grand procession, with hundreds of Gilles dancing through the streets from dawn into the evening fireworks, is the payoff after two days of buildup — masked "Peasants" and other characters on Sunday and Monday setting the stage.
It's also a trivially easy day trip from Brussels, which means you can dip into one of Europe's least-touristed great carnivals without much logistical commitment — just a train ticket and a willingness to get pelted with citrus.
