Boryeong Mud Festival

Daecheon Beach spends the rest of the year being a normal, pleasant stretch of sand, and then for two and a half weeks every summer it becomes a mud-slicked obstacle course full of strangers sliding into each other on purpose. You wade into a mud pool the size of a swimming pool, someone you've never met throws a fistful at your back, and that's the whole social contract of Boryeong: nobody's watching to see if you came with friends, because everyone's too busy being covered in mud to notice.

The festival runs its own site in four languages specifically because so much of the crowd is foreign — this isn't a local event tourists stumbled into, it's built to be found. Mud slides, mud wrestling rings, a mud prison you get "arrested" and released from, all of it low-stakes and giggly rather than intense. Solo travelers end up forming instant teams for the sillier competitions purely because standing alone at the edge of a mud pit is a more awkward position than just wading in with whoever's nearby.

Nights belong to the beach stage — K-pop-adjacent concerts and DJ sets with the mud rinsed off (mostly), a beer in hand, and a crowd still riding the high of an afternoon spent gleefully covered in dirt. It's cheap, it's silly, and it does not require you to take yourself seriously for even a minute.
