Angkor Wat International Half Marathon
Siem Reap, Cambodia · Dec 6 · Main quest length: 1 day
The start and finish line sit directly in front of the largest religious monument on earth, which means your warm-up is watching the sun climb over Angkor Wat's spires while a few thousand other runners do the same thing beside you. Few races anywhere pair the athletic achievement with a backdrop this genuinely staggering — you cross the finish line and the finish line happens to be a 12th-century temple complex.
This race carries real weight beyond the spectacle: it's long been tied to landmine survivor support, which draws a charity-runner community that's unusually warm and easy to fall in with, whether you're chasing a personal best or just walking the back half. Siem Reap's backpacker infrastructure is some of the best and cheapest in Southeast Asia, so solo logistics here are close to frictionless — hostels run $5-10 a night, street food a dollar or two a plate, and the whole town is built around independent travelers passing through.
Give yourself extra days after the race — Angkor's temple complex is enormous, and having already run past it once is a good excuse to spend several unhurried solo days exploring the rest on foot and by tuk-tuk.
